In basketball, a head fake is when you pretend you’re about to shoot the ball. The defender jumps up, looking to block your shot. You now have an easy shot because your defender is off balance.
Head fakes aren’t just for the basketball court. Teachers use them all the time. Randy Pausch uses head fakes brilliantly. Instead of telling us what to do directly, he takes us through a series of entertaining stories that have hidden lessons. Stories are more effective teaching tools than lectures, especially when your audience is resistant. Watch his inspiration video here. What stories and head fakes might you use today?
