Pay for meetings.

2/12/2019

I used to hold meetings with around a dozen really earnest educators. They put their hearts into their work, designing lesson plans, even on a Sunday night, to create magic moments for their kids.

Not everyone was always prepared though. Meetings typically lasted longer than needed and were unfocused, no matter how clear agenda items, action items, conflicts, and preview notes were.

This seems to be the norm for most companies.

As the meetings multiply, they can become the biggest time sink, as it keeps everyone in the meeting from doing the work they need to do.

This bothered me to no end, since I was the one writing the checks. An ineffective 1 hr meeting meant I had to pay 12 people for an hour of little work.

If you value your work at $50 / hour, that means you just spent $600 for that meeting.

Even worse, since most peoples' working time is filled with meetings, the amount of time you have to create is even more valuable, likely worth at least 2x your rate.

That means a 1 hour meeting is costing you $1,200 for a dozen people.

How would your meetings change if you had to pay for everyone to be there?

Thanks for caring!

With gratitude,

Anwell Tsai
