Playing Bach in competitions

4/25/2020

Bach is a required piece for major violin competitions.

The problem is, If you play Bach for 20 violinists, you’ll get 20 wildly different opinions.  They’ll passionately debate what Bach’s intention was for each phrase.  They’ll compare you to the thousands of performances they’ve heard before.

Violinists have over 300 years of tradition that’s shaped their views.  And their views keep changing.

What happens if you compose your own piece?  Play something where there’s no tradition?   No comparison group?

Immediately, you’re in a different category.  You’re in a category of one.

Creating is hard. But it’s worth it.

What might you create today?

Thanks for caring!

With gratitude,
