Sea of black

Walking down the street in Tokyo, I was surrounded by a sea of black suits.

A friend living there wanted to stand out to get a girl’s attention. He was thinking of buying a tailored black suit.

I asked him, why not go for a suit in his favorite color? Add patterns to it? Or add a pop of color with a tie or pocket square?

He shrugged his shoulders and said it had to be black. That’s what everyone’s wearing. 

Standing out is tough. It’s not for everyone. It can be uncomfortable. But it’s worth it. 

As Dr. Seuss once said, “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?”
