What can Brahms teach us about imposter syndrome?

10/11/2021

Johannes Brahms is an outstanding composer. However, the world has heard only a tiny fraction of his music. That’s because he was an extreme perfectionist. He routinely threw his music away, thinking they were garbage.

Brahms destroyed his first twenty string quartets before he published his first. He took fifteen years to publish his first symphony. Mozart wrote three of the greatest symphonies in just six weeks!

Brahms struggled with imposter syndrome. How did he combat it? He would show his compositions to trusted friends, like Clara Schumann. Then, with her encouragement, he would share his musical gifts to the world.

If you suffer from imposter syndrome, who do you turn to for a reality check?

Thanks for caring!

With gratitude,

Anwell
