What do legendary violinist Milstein and popstar Ariana Grande have in common?

1/9/2020

We can all agree that gaining a new perspective and seeing the world with different eyes can help us find novel solutions to the hairiest (and most valuable) problems.

The question is, how do we do it?

How do we escape the lense that we’ve refined, honed and polished over time?

Maybe music has the answer.

The great violinist Nathan Milstein, reportedly would imitate other famous violinists’ musical style to a startling degree in private parties.

This practice continues into pop music with popstar Ariana Grande. Here’s a fun clip of her doing musical impressions Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Celine Dion.

But why would they do it?

It must be fun to figure out how to make the sounds of their musical heroes. But equally important, knowing how they produced those sounds, undoubtedly added variety to their own music-making as well.

What would we gain if the next time we approach a problem, we imitated our mentors and heroes and asked ourselves, how would they handle this situation? And then actually try it, unfiltered?

Thanks for caring!

With gratitude,

Anwell Tsai
